am I a gringa yet? the answer is yes
you know how they say you dont realize what you have until its gone? yeah that is how I feel about communication. A lot of other things too. but especially communication. holy cow. what a week. We arrived in Costa Rica Monday night. The first thing we did was we went to a super nice mall here and ate at Johnny Rockets with the mission president and his wife! and then for the next 3 days we stayed in a way nice hotel with a gourmet breakfast while we did training and other stuff for our visa. it was amazing! during that time president kept telling us that it was all part of a "soft landing" and that our "soft landing" would come to an end. haha yeah, he was right. the soft landing ended on thursday when we got our companions and left to our new area.
my companion is hermana zapata from columbia, she is so awesome! but she doesnt know english, so communicating is rough haha. the first thing she said to me was that she likes to eat a lot of food, and that is when I knew we would be good friends. the dictonary app on our phone has become our best friend. yes, we have smart phones! crazy right? i was shocked when i found that out. the internet is blocked but we have the gospel library app.
on saturday we had a baptism! i was so pumped that I got to experience a baptism within the first few days of my mission, until the night before when my comp told me that I would be SPEAKING AT IT. We planned to teach the plan of salvation together and I wrote out exactly what I was going to say so that I would be prepared. Well, when we got up there to teach, she started teaching about the gospel of jesus christ, not the plan of salvation. I paniced and did not know what to do hahah but I just tried to go along with it. I sounded like a 2 year old, but oh well, it worked out hahah. OH and 10 minutes before the meeting started I was told that I would be PLAYING THE PIANO. I have not played the piano since 9th grade seminary. that was terrifying and I messed up a million time. oh well. it was a fun experience
on sunday we went to our branch of 48. it is small but so cute. it is really overwhelming when everyone tries to talk to me and all I have to offer is a blank starre because I dont understand anything of what is going on. and then during the meeting I was asked to bare my testimony on the spot. once again, terrrifying, and I sound like a 2 year old, but it worked out.
other than that, we just go and visit people and teach lessons. its actually amazing how willing people are to hear our message! we can just talk to a random stranger on the bus and next thing you know we are in their house giving a lesson. in costa rica it is basically an open door policy. we just stand outside their house and yell "upe buenas" and they let us in and we share a message! so amazing.
the other day <i was feeling very overwhelmed because I didn{t unerstand the money, or the langugage or the culture, or where to buy food or any way to live, but then I read 3 nephi 13 31-34.wow. exactly what i needed to hear. I realized <i just need to focus on missionary work and everything else will work out :)
okay sorry for my bad grammar, i don{t understand how this keyboard works, i will send pics once i figure out how.much love, hermana hill
